Commerce Roundtable - Day 2 LIVESTREAM
Rundown
Day 2 of an in-person Commerce Roundtable conference, livestreamed with Chris and Colin working the floor and pulling attendees on set, including a Common Thread CMO and a SaaS founder fresh off a European trip. Conversation ranges from turning employees and creators into platformed experts, to event hosting logistics, to hot takes on Nike's brand confusion and SaaS market sentiment.
Takes from this episode
Deliberately platforming employees as visible experts, even knowing some will eventually leave, is worth it because it builds a recruiting and content engine.
I knew then that people would leave and it would platform them way and I was like that's what we want.
In-person events should be planned as pre/during/post phases, and who you send matters because the wrong personality type (e.g. a hard-sell 'bulldog') can undercut a laid-back activation.
Uh what I would suggest is think of your events in three phases. You have pre, during, and post... This isn't who you want to send the bulldog to.
Brand hype only sustainably lifts a company out of its 'gravity well' when there's a genuinely strong product behind it, citing Ramp winning out over Brex.
a lot of times if you have a product to back it up, if you want to get out of the gravity well, strap on the brand boosters
Nike caving to online backlash and pulling its 'runners welcome, walkers tolerated' sign shows the brand no longer knows its own identity or ICP.
Another continuous L for Nike... They don't know who they are anymore. They don't know what to release. They don't know kind of who their ICP is.
Scaling a creative engine mainly comes down to finding and enabling more creators to make low-lift, phone-shot content for the brand, not producing fewer higher-polish assets.
finding creators who want to create for the brand... it's so such a low lift just to whip out your iPhone
